Other victims on Friday criticised the church's internal handling of abuse, including moving pedophile priests from parish to parish.

Mairead Ashcroft told the inquiry she was abused as a child by Brother Bernard Hartman and had even received a letter of apology from him, but the church later said there was no record of her complaint.

She has spent years suffering post-traumatic stress and fearing her experience as a sex abuse victim would change her.

"I believed that I would grow up to be an abuser," she said.

This is a reality that rarely gets spoken of.

The long term damage- living in fear of what might be, even if it never comes to pass- cannot be measured.

A perpetual PTSD.

Good find- and important.

It's just awful. On top of everything else the girl has to deal with the idea that she'll be viewed suspiciously as a result. I find that sort of scenario (where the victim becomes a perpetrator) hard to credit anyway (but I'm not an expert and havent seen any data - just aware that's it's a commonly encountered notion). Personally, I would think that the last thing a victim of child rape would do would be to become a child rapist themselves.

In a widely watched televised debate – which led to ongoing debate over the winner – Cardinal Pell said "the little Jewish people" were shepherds who lacked intellectual development.

"I've got a great admiration for the Jews but we don't need to exaggerate their contribution in their early days," he said on ABC television. "They weren't intellectually the equal of [the Egyptians or Persians] – intellectually, morally ... The poor – the little Jewish people, they were originally shepherds. They were stuck. They're still stuck between these great powers."

For anyone who still doubts that sowing the seeds of religion in pools of ignorance isn't a matter of policy - that's exactly how Pell thinks it's always been and it's all good as far as he's concerned.

Not even mentioning the awesome foot-in-mouthery (if one is being generous) about the holocaust that comes next...

What a dimwit.

This guy does more to give religion a bad name than do the pedophiles. They are broken and dysfunctional.

The Church hierarchic organization (of the hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil variety) which makes room for and accommodation these misfits do so out of choice- not compulsion. Is it any wonder so many misfits are drawn to the place which cover for them, a place which denies the problems?

Tragedy upon tragedy upon tragedy.

Yep it's really no surprise at all that organisations that exhibit sociopathic tendencies will attract actual sociopaths.

The catholic church has been shamelessly glib at best all the way through this.

re: #4 Ayeless in Ghazi

I don't believe anyone can argue the institution of the Church is not dysfunctional (a mild way of saying 'broken'.)

I do believe the major push back from many Catholics comes from the idea that critics of the Church is by default a criticism of the believers of their faith. All too often there is not an attempt to distinguish the two- and hence the push back.

Now, you and I have differing views of faith. However in no way do I believe either one of us would saddle the excesses of the movement or even individuals with the vast majority of people on either side of the that fence.

From where I stand, deeds always supersede creed- be that creed of religious or non religious origins.

And is the case more often than not, creed is the real problem. I don't give a damn what anyone believes- his or her behavior will speak to their morality more eloquently than any creed he may subscribe to.

I think we can find examples of this in all religions.

Then show examples from all religions.

Child sex abuse scandals roil Australia’s Jewish community

News of another scandal at a Melbourne Jewish organization comes days after Australia’s PM calls for a royal commission of inquiry into the ‘insidious evil acts’ of institutional child sexual abuse across religious denominations.

Protestants are not technically another religion from Catholicism, just another Christian sect but here goes:
